Why SIM?

Contributing to a learning nation

SIM began life on 28 November 1964 as a not-for-profit membership institution with the mission of developing Singapore’s managerial and manpower pool.

Participants of the fourth residential Advanced Management Programme held in Cameron Highlands in 1968, and conducted by professors from Harvard Business School

SIM began by offering a variety of short courses catering to all levels of management (from managers to executives) to upgrade their competencies. SIM had collaborated closely with the then University of Singapore, Nanyang University and Singapore Polytechnic to plan and deliver them.

Subjects included accounting, sales and supervisory skills. Other industry-specific courses and workshops in the early years covered themes on double taxation, the promotion of exports, and tourism. The hallmark course was the residential Advanced Management Programme for chief executives and other corporate honchos, conducted by professors from Harvard Business School.

Through a grant of $300,000 from the Ford Foundation, SIM played host to post-graduate scholars from the Stanford and Harvard Business Schools. The scholars conducted short courses in finance and marketing, and taught in the Junior Management Programme, the first SIM two-year evening management course that preceded the Diploma in Management Studies.

The first formal management education programme – Diploma in Management Studies was
launched in 1973.

SIM was selected by the Ministry of Education in 1992 to run the acclaimed Open University Degree Programme in Singapore, which was renamed SIM Open University Centre in 2002.

With the experience gained from the collaboration, SIM started its own private University, now SIM Global Education, for working adults. The first student intake was in January 2006.

“For close to four decades, SIM has helped to educate, train and develop Singapore's manpower in-line with the nation's economic and industrial development. I look forward to SIM's continued contribution to Singapore's strategic thrust to build a learning nation in the quest towards becoming an innovation-driven economy of the future." - Dr. Tony Tan, then Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence at the opening of SIM's new headquarters on 19 October 2001
